Mr. Shanbag’s Shop is a short documentary film that provides an intimate portrait of the owner of Premier Books, a bookshop that has been located in the heart of the city of Bangalore in India for over 35 years. In the shop, customers negotiate their way amidst the stacks of books, digging through the layers of books to reveal, as one customer describes, “an archaeology of literary life.” Both the bookshop and its owner charm the residents and visitors in the city and have become institutions in their own rights. In 2006, Mr. Shanbag is faced with possibly having to close his shop when his landlords decide not to renew his lease due to the value of the property in this fast-changing city.
